Message from the President…

October 2007

I've been privileged to serve as president of ASAP for the past three years. Let's take a moment to reflect on the many accomplishments attained during this time. ASAP has remained steadfast in working to fulfill a very special purpose.

We have one mission: to improve the lives of persons affected by syringomyelia, Chiari malformation and related disorders while we find the cure.

We have one vision: a world without the devastating effects of syringomyelia, Chiari malformation and related disorders.

ASAP implements its mission to improve lives by funding programs that promote education. Examples include: Connections newsletter, e-mail announcements, disability-related information, an annual medical conference, informational pamphlets, DVDs, videos, conference notebooks and a web site that is visited an average of 14,000 times per week.

ASAP provides support by offering a toll-free telephone line, chat room, message board, listserv and other e-mail mailing lists, support group information, special group activities for the youth through our Kids For A Cure Club, resources for parents and opportunities for peer-to-peer networking.

Each week, we send an average of 75 information packets in response to requests received from our website outreach program. People facing the unknowns of syringomyelia and Chiari malformation rely on us to provide accurate and trustworthy information.

Behind the programs that are implemented to improve lives, ASAP remains steadfast to its ultimate mission: find the cure. We carefully seek out and fund quality research proposals that advance our understanding of the etiology of the disorders and offer innovative approaches to treatment.

ASAP has committed itself to funding a national, multi-centered outcome study. The goal of this multi-year project is to evaluate surgical outcomes for patients with Chiari I malformation with or without syringomyelia in hopes of establishing treatment protocols.

As we remain focused on our goals, we look to forward to new and exciting opportunities. The future is brighter than ever thanks to the dedication of individuals who come together in support of our mission and vision.
