2 WEEKS POST-OP DECOMPRESSION AND FUSION

Postby tpearson » Sun Apr 12, 2009 8:20 pm

Our son Grant is 13. He underwent posterior decompression and craniotomy as well as fusion of c1 and c2 due to instability that was found intra op. We were treated at the University of Iowa by Dr. Menezes. Grant is awesome. He had surgery on Mon. March 30th and went home the same Saturday. He wears a minerva brace which will help to stabilize the neck where the bone that was removed fromhe back of his head was fused to his vertebrae. He manages the pain with Tylenol. His reflux issues are much better, but when he is up and about, and tired, the headaches still plague him. We knew the surgery was 85% success rate, and we contunue to pray we aren't in the 15%. We are grateful to this web site and for the support from others. We contunue to have faith that 6 months from now when he can take off the brace he will be pain free and a normal teenage boy. He was dx with chiari malformation type 1 this last fall. Had hx of headaches with running and sneezing for over a year. That is our success story. Blessings.

From your keyboard to God's ears!

So glad that things went well--sounds like he is an amazing kid!

Hope things continue to progress nicely and that one day he may be pain free!
