ASAP Appoints New Research Chair

The ASAP Board of Directors is
pleased to announce that Dr.
John D. Heiss, has
agreed to chair the Research Committee. In addition to his role in
attracting and evaluating
promising new investigations, Dr. Heiss will also serve on the ASAP Board of Directors. His medical and scientific
judgment and his
passion for helping those in our community with syringomyelia and Chiari malformation will be of immense value.
Dr. Heiss heads up the Clinical
Unit in the Surgical
Neurology Branch of NINDS
at the National Institutes of Health. He is
also vice-chair of the
NINDS Institutional Review Board and member of the surgical
administrative
committee.
Dr. Heiss received both his
B.S. in Biomedical Sciences and
his M.D. degree from the University of Michigan.
He completed his surgical internship and his
residency in neurosurgery at the University of Cincinnati College of
Medicine. Prior to
joining NINDS, Dr.
Heiss was assistant clinical professor and co-director of the
Neuroscience
Intensive Care Unit at the University of Cincinnati.
During this time he was also a neurosurgeon
at the Mayfield Neurological Institute.
An expert in surgery for brain
tumors, syringomyelia, and
epilepsy, Dr. Heiss has lectured extensively on various topics in
neuroscience
and neurosurgery, and has published dozens of original research papers,
review
articles and abstracts based on his research.
He has served on grant review panels for the
National Cancer
Institute. Dr.
Heiss is board certified
in neurological surgery by the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
